Ruska jama Cave

1-3

Together with Pečinka, Krompirjeva jama, Klobasja jama and Lojzova jama caves, Ruska jama Cave rounds up the offer of the excellent hiking experience along the karst section of the Walk of Peace. It was used by the Austro-Hungarian military units to store ammunition. In 1915, more than 30 thousand Russian prisoners of war were brought to the Isonzo Front. In very harsh conditions, they built military infrastructure, dug trenches, paths and caverns. They sought for shelter in caves that protected them against shootings. One of the largest caves was Ruska jama Cave. With the financial support of Miren-Kostanjevica Municipality and the help of Prvi Svit Association, the members of the Temnica Caving Association cleaned the cave and arranged access to it. The opening ceremony and plaque erection was co-financed by Russia upon the initiative of the Russian Embassy in Slovenia.
