The serene side of Slovenia has an artistic soul and exciting history at the crossroad of cultures. Now, you can enjoy in the peacefulness of the Vipava River and amidst the karst hills, because the turbulent stories from the past are now part of our history and not current life. History and nature have inspired world renowned artists and local creative artists who want to share their works with you. The greatest artwork of the local community is hidden among the vineyards, olive groves and karst common land – the dry-stoned walls that were built through centuries by local people to protect the fields from the bora wind. They now present an artwork, which is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The prehistoric sites and ancient Roman heritage reveal life in the centre of major trade and military routes. Old Romans controlled the passage towards the Soča River from Miren, a millennium after them, the famous Leonardo da Vinci planned dikes and water blocks to defend the Vipava Valley against the Turks. Aquileian patriarch and monks, knight families and the Counts of Gorizia, the Hapsburgs and Austro-Hungarian noblemen... the list of prominent guests in the Miren Kras region is quite extensive. The view of all sides of history can be experienced in Cerje, a panoramic plateau with the mighty Monument of Peace that opens the views of the Alps and the sea.
Right next to the Slovenian-Italian border, a borderless space with a unique tourist story is being built during the preparations for the European Capital of Culture 2025.
