Green views and the feeling of peace
Miren Kras is nested between serenity and the feeling of peace that is very rare. Walk along the karst stone roads, across meadows and hills. Locals appreciate the feeling of peace because they have survived the dark century of both world wars. The Isonzo Front impacted their ancestors in World War I hundred years ago. This 90 km long front-line rand from the highest peaks of the Julian Alps to the Gulf of Trieste and also to the Karst region, where the battle hinterland was located.
Today, one can find regulated and marked Walk of Peace trails that are the perfect destination for hikers and history buffs. They connect 15 places and tell the story about the maelstrom of war, the power of nature and the knowledge brought by time. It is hard to imagine the soldiers and battles at sites which now offer wonderful views that stretch from the Alps to the Friuli region and the sea. The historical memory of war preserves peace, therefore, we have to nurture it. The paths in the Karst regaion are part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea.
Miren Kras has preserved WWI heritage that can be explored along 5 hiking trails of different lengths (from 5 to 11 km). Do not miss Borojević’s stone throne, dedicated to the famous Knight of Isonzo as this Austro-Hungarian field marshal was called. He successfully planned the overturn on the front, which led to the final battle and an unexpected final defeat of the Italian army. Enjoy the view from the top of the mighty Peace Monument of Peace in Cerje. Discover defence trenches, caverns and caves that were the only place for soldiers to rest.
Walk of Peace trails on the Karst:
- 4.6 km path through underground WWI areas: Temnica – Krompirjeva jama Cave – Klobasja jama CAve – Lojzova jama Cave – Temnica
- 5.2 km hike along the edges of the karst plateau: Opatje selo – Nova vas – Županov vrh – Kremenjak – Sela na Krasu
- 5.9 km hike along the ridge of the Črni hribi hills: Temnica – Lipa – Trstelj – Tem-nica
- 8.6 km hike along the route of the former military railway: Temnica – Lipa – Tem-nica
- 11 km hike among the defence sites below Cerje: Vrh Drage – Srčna dol – Cerje – Pečinka Cave – Pečina
