Lojzova jama Cave

Natural karst caves provided the only safe shelter for soldiers during the Isonzo Front (1915 to 1917). Lojzova jama Cave got its name after Alois Peter Bock, who commanded the cave and construction section of the Austro-Hungarian army. The natural entrance to the cave is a 11-metres deep karst depression that expands to a spacious hall. The army built a multi-storey wooden building in the cave, where 1500 soldiers and 30 officers rested. Two excavated artificial tunnels led to Lojzova jama Cave. After the shelter was arranged, the natural entrance was closed with several layers of concrete to protect the cave against grenades. The protection cover and wooden equipment in the cave have not been preserved. Nowadays, the cave can be visited upon prior agreement with the Temnica Caving Club.
