Krompirjeva jama Cave

The natural karst plateaus were the area of the Isonzo Front during the First World War. The Austro-Hungarian soldiers searched for shelter everywhere, also below the ground. Many karst caves were arranged as shelters and storage areas. Krompirjeva jama (Potato Cave) was used to store produce and potatoes, hence its name. In winter, the cave accommodated 500 soldiers and 8 officers. The interior had bulk beds on several floors and wooden cabins for officers. The cave even had a phone station, kitchen, toilets, water reservoir and ammunition storage. Nowadays, the cave can be visited upon prior agreement with the Temnica Caving Club.
