A century ago, the soldiers at the Isonzo Front hectically searched for a safe shelter. They had to build their own war infrastructure, including roads, railways and water pipelines. They rested from work and battles in natural karst caves which thy used for temporary residences and ammunition as well as food storage. The caving and building section of the Austro-Hungarian army researched and rearranged many caves on the karst plateaus. The cave has good natural ventilation(suitable for sausage curing after which the cave got its name) and it is organised in several passages. Soldiers put bulk beds, ventilation system and toilets on terraces. The cave provided shelter to approx. 250 soldiers and the commanders of the infantry brigade. Nowadays, the cave can be visited upon prior agreement with the Temnica Caving Club.
