Štanjel

Štanjel is one of the oldest settlements in the Karst Region, known for its old village centre It was named after the patron saint of the church, Saint Daniel.

More about the medieval village of Štanjel:

  • Štanjel Castle represents the dominant part of the old village
  • Štanjel Hill or Turn displays the remains of a Roman fort (Gledanica), from where the Romans controlled the area entering Italy
  • Ferrari’s garden was constructed in the period between world wars according to the plans of Max Fabiani as a part of Ferrari’s villa
  • The symbol of Štanjel is the unique belltower wwith its characteristic spire that was added to the Church of St Daniel in 1609
  • The Karst House, most likely built in the 14th or 15th century, shows how inventive these modest inhabitants were, using stone for construction
  • Two exhibitions are displayed in the square tower of the square tower, as a dedication to Maks Fabiani
  • Permanent exhibition of Spacal’s artwork has been displayed in one section of the Štanjel Castle since 1988. The gallery occasionally hosts other exhibitions. Tourist Information Centre and a shop with local products and souvenirs are located at the entrance to the gallery.
