Solkan bridge

There are many famous bridges in the world, for instance the bridge on the river Kwai in Thailand, the Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge in Venice. But, Solkan has the most prominent stone railway bridge. It has the largest stone arch in the world and represents the peak of bridge construction expertise and engineering of the beginning of the 20th century.
Solkan Bridge was built in 1905 as part of the railway connection between Trieste and Vienna. It is characterised by exceptional elegance and the simplicity of stone construction which crosses the Soča River like a rainbow. It survived both world wars. In the First World War, i.e. in 1916, it was mined with 930 kg of explosive and after a horrific blast, the arch fell into the Soča River. It withheld 6 strikes by allied air forces during the Second World War. It was restored by the Italians in 1927.
