Soča river mouth Natural reserve

The mouth of the Soča River to the Adriatic Sea is located at the Isola della Cona natural reserve near Monfalcone. Numerous bilingual signs remind us that many Slovenians still live here on this side of the border. In the main part of the natural reserve, about a kilometre from the mouth of the Soča River, you can walk along the circular study trail where you can meet and learn about many swamp birds, amphibians, insects and also horses that graze in the park. There are many bird observation points along the trail. With some luck, you can meet a scared snake, in more shrubby parts of the swamp, you can observe many colourful dragonflies and frogs. The reserve itself encompasses approx. 2400 hecatares and is a paradise for bird admirers, because there are approximatelly three hundred birds temporarily or permanently living there. Walk to the mouth of the Soča River that slowly meanders between numerous lagoons and swampy islands, and does not even merely resemble the lively alpine turquoise river as is known among the visitors of the northern Primorska region. Many info boards will tell you more about the rich animal underwater world of the natural reserve. The mouth of the Soča River is in Italy near the Slovenian border, but can still be integrated in the Primorska and Notranjska region (Coastal and Karst region).
