MIREN KRAS

Important events

There is always something happening in Miren Kras. A cycling race, carnival or brickwork festival; the diligent members of more than 30 associations together with local people organise unforgettable events that leave a mark in our hearts and memory. Women’s and tourist associations together with children are very active in culture. Ensembles, choirs and orchestras always provide for music, and different sport clubs for recreation. With melodies, food and manual skills, they preserve the rich tradition and history.

Peace Day in Cerje in September

Every year, the International Peace Day is celebrated in Cerje.  Initially, the students of Slovenian Unesco high schools are gathered and discuss current topics. On the following day, reputable speakers bring back the memory of conflicts between nations and wars that took so many lives. Together, the local people and visitors remember history and celebrate the fact that peace, freedom and friendship prevail here.

Asparagus Festival in May

The most popular vegetables in Miren Krast – white and green asparagus, are celebrated for an entire weekend of every year in May. Traditional and unusual dishes, even desserts are made from asparagus by skilful chefs. Have you heard of asparagus marmalade or asparagus ice cream? Sea, salt or vegetarian combinations are best paired with a glass of wine that is offered at the event by local wine makers. The greatest attraction at the event is the Sunday cart promenade with the representation of chores and special customs in the countryside.

Labour Day in Opatje Selo

Worker’s holiday that is known all around the world, is also celebrated every year in Miren Kras in the form of a major regional meeting of six municipalities of the Primorska region.  Cultural programme is also combined with an entertainment programme for all generations and is held until early morning hours in one of the most beautiful karst sceneries.  Traditional raffle, local food and dance music.

“Radička” Dandelion Day in March

Dandelion or “radička” in Miren dialect is one more plant that grows well in the Vipava and Karst climate, and is very popular. It is used to make salads, soups, pies and even desserts. All this and more is cooked in pots at the Village Dandelion Day, a traditional holiday at the start of spring. A climb to the nearby hill speeds up your blood flow in the morning, and you get your energy back with a karst lunch where dandelion is the main star.

Karst Cross-Country Run in April

We like to eat good in Miren Kras, but we also like to live actively and be healthy. Early in spring, in February and March, mountain run and mountain cycling race are held on Miren forest paths, roads and meadow downhill runs. Have you ever run through a cave? The Karst Cross-Country Run is a great opportunity for new experience, attended by more than 600 visitors from Slovenia and neighbouring countries.

Easter Coin Tossing

There are many customs related to Easter eggs in Slovenia, and one of them is quite interesting in Miren Kras. Competitors like to spice up the coin tossing at cooked eggs, where the coin must remain the egg; they put wooden or waxed eggs instead of real ones, which is always a lot of fun. Competitions in Miren have been organised since 1979 and are attended by men, women and children. This tradition has also been entered in the Slovenian Intangible Cultural Heritage Register.
