MIREN KRAS

History and art

The stone giant hides precious treasures of history and arts and intertwines the past with the future. The mighty for on seven floors displays various periods of Slovenian history and milestones: from ancient history to the dark periods of world wars, Slovenian war of independence to the last floor with an observation platform that symbolises the view of the future.

When you enter the ground floor of the Monument of Peace, you can see the starry sky that shines in the summer solstice. Your journey through Slovenian history starts under the shiny stars. Stop at the monument, dedicated to the oldest preserved written word in Slovenian language – the Freising manuscripts. On the ground floor, you will be astounded by the life works of Rudi Španzel, i.e. the painting “The Dance of Life and Death” and "The Wind of Oblivion" that remind us of the horrors and grandness of the First World War. There you can continue to the cellar to see the People and War exhibition. The latter presents every aspect of wars and displays how the war impacted individual lives. An exhibition, full of emotional detail, makes a strong impression on every visitor. You can continue to the upper floors of the Monument of Peace, where you can see the modern periods of Slovenian history. Most emphasis is put on the time of the First World War and the Isonzo Front, which left behind most victims right on the territory of the monument. This part of the exhibition presents the story of TIGR anti-fascist movement and the tragic experience of the local population, who had to migrate during the wars. Through fascism and the Second World War, the story of Slovenia is completed with independence. On the last, fifth floor, the covered platform offers breathtaking views of the land and architecturally symbolises the view in the bright future.

Besides permanent exhibitions entitled the Isonzo Front and the Man and War, the fourth and fifth floors regularly host exhibitions by various distinguished artists.
