The colourful world of the Vipava river basin - thematic learning path

Family friendly thematic path

The Vipava river is considered to be the only river in Europe with a deltaic source. From the town of Vipava, after which it got its name, its path winds through romantic villages of the Primorska region, all the way to Italy, where it flows into the sea together with the Soča river. The Vipava river is fed by many affluents, and gets a special charm by soft meanders winding along the entire valley, by stone bridges and many preserved sawmills as well as mills. The most beautiful is a mill in Pekel, near Dornberk, and a very interesting one is a still active mill in Renče.

For fishing, fly fishing and other techniques, the river is a real paradise, as it is home to carps, pikes, common nases and sheatfish, which reach a size of up to 2 meters.

In summer, Vipava river is ideal for water experiences, especially sup and kayaking. Cycling, hiking and horseback riding along the river impress with its serenity and natural beauty. The lush banks are home to many birds especially in the downstream.

The thematic learning path is part of the Natura 2000 area and brings a comprehensive experience of outdoor activities (you can take it on foot, by bike or on horseback), learning about natural values, habitats of protected animals and includes many stopovers for culinary pampering and sightseeing.

You can go on the 40 km long route alone or with your family. The experience is fun and educational at the same time and especially suitable for children. Along the way, a guidance infrastructure has been set up, which draws attention to the most sensitive areas of the valley with descriptions of individual habitats and protected animal and plant species, and raises awareness of the importance of their conservation.

The main message of the trail is the importance of cooperation between man and nature.

Entry point: anywhere along the Vipava river. You can follow the signs in both directions.

Duration: you can walk the whole route in two days or cycle in one morning, but you can choose any length of the route depending on your physical condition.
